A Rainbow of Tourmaline

Tourmaline as a crystal is a complex borosilicate which forms in granites and pegmatites and can be found in alluvial deposits. Tourmaline under mechanical stress develops electrical charges on its surface and when electrical charge is added the crystals shows mechanical stress. This is known as piezo-electricity. In this mineral, one end becomes positively charged, and the other negatively charged, which is why it can be so useful as a switching device in industry, especially in pressure gauges. Each variety has a name . Each colour is caused by the variations in chemical composition.
